Meet the Artist

Lisa Houston is an artist living in a remote, almost hidden peninsula on Scotland’s west coast. She discovered Ardnamurchan over thirty years ago and has lived there permanently since 2013. It is living in this wild and rugged place that inspired her to paint.

Her work is informed by exploring, observing and recording elements in the landscape whether that be in the ancient oakwoods, walking along the shore at low tide or taking in the view from the top of a Corbett. The ever-changing weather brings a unique quality of light and atmosphere that washes over the landscape creating drama. She is also inspired by time spent on the water sailing in and around the Hebridean Islands. The land takes on a different perspective when viewed from the sea.

She uses sketchbooks to record lines, shapes and colours observed in the landscape. Sketches are created using pastels, inks, and charcoal. Back in her studio she refines the sketches to produce finished pieces in oil or mixed media. Her paintings don’t set out to record a particular view but rather to reflect a memory or emotion about a place once visited.

Her work is exhibited in several Scottish galleries.
