About Lisa Houston
I’m an artist based on the west coast of Scotland.
I live amidst mountains, glens and lochs and just a short drive to the open sea. The constantly changing weather brings with it a unique quality of light that washes over the landscape.
Living in these unique surroundings is what inspires my mixed media and oil paintings.

New Work for the Spring Show at Resipole Studios
/by Lisa HoustonThe Spring Show opened at Resipole Studios on Saturday 6th April, and I’m thrilled, as always, to have some new work in the exhibition. Here are the five paintings… inspired by the land and the sea where I live and from the journeys I make by boat to the Outer Hebrides every sailing season.
My paintings are basically a collection of memories of things seen in fleeting moments.
The Spring exhibition runs through until 18th May and there are many wonderful artworks on display in the gallery. There is also an exhibition in the White Gallery of beautiful work by artists Rhea Banker and Jane Rushton: An Intimacy of place.
Take a look at the website resipolestudios.co.uk for more information about the paintings, or if you are up and around Ardnamurchan, why not make a visit😊
An invitation to exhibit in a New Gallery
/by Lisa HoustonI was absolutely delighted to be invited to show my work at a wonderful new gallery in the Highland Perthshire town of Pitlochry.
Housed in a Victorian building, The Perthshire Gallery provides a natural gallery space with its high ceilings and large windows and showcases a wide variety of contemporary art, artists and makers.
It’s a privilege to be given the opportunity to exhibit alongside many established artists and I’m really looking forward to my first exhibition there which opens on 28th March and runs through to 14th June 2025. Delivering the paintings involves a road trip in the van which is always an adventure!
I set about creating a collection of new work that would hopefully hang well together in the exhibition. There’s no doubt this body of work has been influenced by the stormy weather on the loch this winter!
I want to thank Jennifer and Emily for giving me this opportunity to show my work in the Spring Exhibition and I’m excited and nervous in equal measure!
For more information about any of my paintings, please don’t hesitate to get in touch… or check out the gallery website… or contact the gallery directly – details below 😊

Aberfeldy Gallery Spring Exhibition 2025
/by Lisa HoustonThese two paintings are off to Aberfeldy Gallery for their Spring Exhibition, which runs from 15th March through to 9th June.
Sanna Tide
Evening Lights
Inspired by a trip along the single-track road to beautiful Sanna Bay, which lies at the most westerly point in mainland Britain, a place where light and magic happens even on a dull day.
On a clear day, you can see the Small Isles of Rum, Muck, Eigg and Canna, and if you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a passing whale or dolphin from the shore!
Sanna is a destination for many of the tourists that visit Ardnamurchan, even then it is seldom busy, so you can often have the whole beach to yourself and enjoy the solitude.
Both paintings are beautifully framed.
Contact Adam at Aberfeldy Gallery if you are interested in owning one of these paintings.
A new season begins at Finsbay Gallery on Harris
/by Lisa HoustonI was delighted to be asked once again to provide work for the new season at Finsbay Gallery on Harris. Gallery owner Valerie-Anne Ruffles got in touch to let me know she’d like some small pieces for the gallery opening in March. Finsbay is a small contemporary art gallery in the Bays of Harris, and I’d highly recommend the drive along the Golden Road to get there. This is not a journey for the faint-hearted. You’ll traverse miles of sinuous single-track roads, occasionally passing through isolated communities, but in the right weather, it provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the rocky landscape of the East Coast.
I must thank my lovely neighbours, Lynne and Steven for delivering my art this year…when I heard they were holidaying on Harris, it was too good an opportunity to miss. So, they had an extra parcel in their camper van when they set off from Resipole!
I’m hoping to have a visit later in the year 😊
New Beginnings
/by Lisa HoustonI am currently beavering away in my studio developing a body of work that will hopefully be ready to deliver to various galleries by the end of March for Spring shows…
It’s a real privilege to be invited to show my work in a gallery; I never take it for granted. I’m not great at working under the pressure of a deadline, but I think I’m on track!
I was also very surprised and excited to be invited to show a few of my paintings at a wonderful new gallery in Pitlochry. It’s a lovely space in a busy town, so I feel very grateful to be given this opportunity…
Watch this space for more information about the gallery and images of the artwork… 😊
New Work
/by Lisa HoustonI took new work to Resipole Studios for their Winter Show and was delighted that the painting in the top right – bathed in pale moonlight – was SOLD. I also sold a couple of paintings directly from my studio to collectors of my work, which was truly lovely.
It’s a wonderful feeling to know that some people will be unwrapping one of my paintings as a gift this Christmas morning.
Eduard Alessandro Studios
/by Lisa HoustonIn November, these three 40 x 40 cm paintings were delivered to Eduardo Alessandro Gallery in Broughty Ferry for their Winter Show… As a bonus, I got an opportunity to get my Christmas shopping started in Dundee! Where I live, there are lovely local makers and crafters, but sometimes you need a visit to M&S and TKMaxx !!!
Take a look at the gallery website for details or send me a message if you’d like to know more about these paintings.

Aberfeldy Gallery
/by Lisa HoustonI was thrilled when these two new seascapes, inspired by a summer sailing trip to the Outer Hebrides, were sent off to Aberfeldy Gallery for their Autumn and Winter Exhibition.
Though it wasn’t a great year for sailing due to some very wet and stormy weather, this voyage was undoubtedly a highlight of our season. At least the sun shone some of the time, and the winds were kind to us!

More Works on Paper
/by Lisa HoustonI mostly paint on canvas boards or canvas, but I enjoy the freedom of creating mixed-media paintings on paper using ink, pastels and paint. This series was included in the 2024 Autumn Show at Resipole Studios.

Nine Small Paintings
/by Lisa HoustonI absolutely adore this collection of small paintings… all created on wood blocks leftover from when we built our house.
They are beautifully showcased in box frames, and there are some little gems in this collection… nine small mixed media paintings that pack a punch.
I believe they belong together, so I’ve been keeping them in my studio, but they will be available for purchase later this year.
