Waiting at Uig, Skye, for the ferry to Harris
Out of the blue, back in November 2023, I got a phone call from Valerie-Anne Ruffles, owner of Finsbay Gallery on the Isle of Harris, asking if I’d be interested in showing my work there this season. Val had seen my painting, Mara, which was an entry in the Highland Art Prize, and contacted me as a result. I was both astonished and delighted!
Weather permitting, we try to sail there every year, and a lot of my work is inspired by the light and colours of the Hebridean landscape, but it was a first to be invited to show my art there!
So, a plan was made, and we set off on a road trip in our campervan to deliver twelve paintings to Finsbay Gallery on Wednesday, 13th March. Unfortunately, both the sailings from Mallaig to Skye and Skye to Harris were cancelled that day due to adverse weather conditions, so undeterred, we drove the long way to Uig over the Skye Bridge and enjoyed the scenery along the way. We were booked on a ferry the next day, so we had time to do a bit of exploring on Skye and found ourselves walking at the Quiraing – a famous landmark not far from Uig. No comment about the huge car park with pay & display machines to accommodate the massive influx of tourists to this famous beauty spot… Though out of season, it was still relatively quiet and didn’t disappoint.

Archie in his element!
The ferry the next day took about an hour and a half to go from Uig to Tarbert. These days, you are allowed to take your dog inside during the crossing, so Archie was chuffed about that too!
It has been a while since we travelled by road to Harris, and I’d forgotten just how breathtaking it is there. Beautifully clear, turquoise water and glorious white sandy beaches appear practically around every corner. The weather was better than forecast, which was a definite bonus, although I expect Harris to be beautiful in any weather.

Finsbay Gallery
It was wonderful to meet Val in person and to deliver my paintings to her lovely wee gallery, which is jam-packed with beautiful and evocative artworks. Fingers crossed that someone will like my paintings enough to want to take one home with them from their trip to Harris! Hopefully, we will get a reason to go again… maybe by sea the next time.
If you are lucky enough to visit the Isle of Harris this season, pop into the Finsbay Gallery on your travels… you won’t be disappointed.
Twentieth Anniversary Exhibition at Resipole Studios
/by Lisa HoustonAn anniversary exhibition celebrating twenty years of Resipole Studios opened on Sunday, 30th June, and I was absolutely delighted to be invited to submit a painting to be exhibited alongside other gallery artists.
The XX exhibition set out to celebrate and acknowledge the significant influence that the west coast of Scotland has had on artists now and in the past and to honour the gallery’s role in bringing artists and their work together in this remote and scenic location.
Works on display included six exquisite paintings by renowned artist Jon Schueler who worked from his studio in Mallaig from 1957. The abstract expression artist created atmospheric paintings that conveyed the drama of the constantly changing weather he experienced while looking out from his studio across the Sound of Sleat. Check out the gallery website, and you will see the emotive Jon Scheuler paintings.
My seascape painting, which was part of the exhibition, is titled Iàn-mara, which is Gaelic for ‘gentle sea’; I was inspired by walking and exploring the wild and empty beaches of the west coast of Scotland.
Iàn-mara | Mixed media | 50 x 109.5 cm (framed) | Available from Resipole Studios
What a great time was had by all at the opening… we enjoyed live music and refreshments surrounded by amazing art and in the company of lovely people.
Thank you to @resipolestudios, Andrew and Kerrie for making it such a special occasion.
Taking a closer look…
/by Lisa HoustonSometimes, all I want to do is sketch, but I don’t often focus on what lies beneath the sea or along the shore. I was captivated by these tiny underwater worlds formed by the abrasion of joints, fractures, and rock surfaces exposed on the beach in front of the house. Shaped by the changing tides and the weather, they teemed with plants and animals that have adapted to living in this harsh environment.
These are experimental mixed media works, and perhaps I should consider creating a series of paintings inspired by rockpools.

#The100DayProject – Here we go again…
/by Lisa Houston#The100DayProject is a free, global art project that takes place online. Every year, thousands of people all around the world commit to 100 days of creating. Anyone can participate, and I’m taking part for the second year in a row.
The idea is simple: choose a creative project, do it every single day for 100 days, and share your process on your social accounts using the hashtag #The100DayProject.
The last time, I found it quite a challenge to do a sketch every single day because, in real life, you have other things you must do… So this year, I’m going to be a bit more flexible in how I tackle it and just take my time.
Although it officially kicks off for 2024 on 18th February, I’ve already started, and here’s the first of my daily sketches…

New Year – New Projects
/by Lisa HoustonThe festive season is well behind us, and I know it can be a complex time for many. This year, our family celebrated Christmas with two ten-month-old babies, and they certainly added a little bit of magic to the proceedings! I am so grateful to be a granny! It’s one of the best things that happened in 2023. That and my first solo show, Mara, at Resipole Studios 😊
January 2024 is doing its best to be remembered as one of the stormiest on record. We also had a significant snowfall, and for a few days, we enjoyed blue skies, freezing temperatures and a snow-covered landscape, which brought a different vibe. Since then, we’ve had back-to-back named storms, which brought with them heavy rain and strong winds… some would say that’s not exceptional here in the west!
It’s great to be back in my studio, and 2024 has got off to an amazing start with invitations to show my work in three new galleries… I’ll share more information about this later in the year. Suffice to say, there’s a mixture of excitement and a certain amount of added pressure to meet deadlines and delivery dates.
I wish you and your special people all the best for this new year and hope 2024 is good for you all.
The photo is Loch Sunart with Ben Resipole in the background, looking splendid in the snow!
I love where I live!

My First Solo Show – MARA
/by Lisa HoustonFrom 16th July to 18th August, Resipole Studios Art Gallery hosted an exhibition of my most recent paintings. It was amazing to have so many of my artworks fill one of the gallery spaces. It was a little bit nerve-wracking too, because it’s not just a painting hanging on the wall but a very personal interpretation, a memory of a place or an emotional reaction to the landscape. I did feel anxious about how other people would respond. As it turned out, everyone was so incredibly supportive, and it was a fabulous and positive experience.
Thank you to everyone who attended the opening event and visited the gallery during the exhibition. I feel very grateful for the lovely feedback you gave me along the way. And a great BIG thank you to all the people who bought one of my paintings… I really appreciate that😊.
Eight paintings in the exhibition, a few from the gallery website, plus several small artworks from a stand, found new homes!
I must especially thank Andrew and Kerrie at Resipole Studios for giving me the opportunity to show my work in the gallery and for creating and promoting such a beautiful exhibition.

The Highland Art Prize
MARA has been entered into the Highland Art Prize by Resipole Studios, and an exhibition of entries will be open to the public from Friday, 13th October to Saturday, 21st October, at The Briggait 1873 Hall, 141 Bridgegate in Glasgow. I’m so looking forward to seeing the exhibition!
Pop along if you’re in Glasgow to see the exhibition.
Art Community #The100DayProject
I recently took part in #The100DayProject along with a few other people from my local art group. It’s a free global art project that takes place online, and every year, thousands of people worldwide commit to 100 days of creating. It’s a challenge aimed at building your creative habit… and developing skills and techniques.
It was such a huge commitment to produce a sketch every day… sometimes it’s not easy in a busy world to find even a spare half an hour… but I thoroughly enjoyed the focus it gave me, and it felt so good to complete the challenge.
Some of my favourite sketches…
Creatives
/by Lisa HoustonIt was a privilege to be invited by photographer Kevin Swift to be part of his ‘Creatives’ project, not least because it includes some incredible portraits of some very well-known creative people, and I feel lucky to be included alongside such auspicious company!
Kevin is a professional freelance photographer, and although based on Ardnamurchan, his work has taken him to different places across the world. His focus as a photographer is on portraiture and the arts.
‘Creatives’ is his ongoing personal project on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula and the wider Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands and involves Kevin connecting with and taking photographic portraits of creative people who live and work here. If you know the area at all, you’ll understand how it provides inspiration for artists and musicians and other creative people alike.
I’m generally not that keen on having my photograph taken, but Kevin came along with his camera and took some shots in my studio and of me sketching down on the shore, and I felt quite relaxed about the whole process.
I can’t thank Kevin enough for the opportunity to be involved, and I’m really delighted with the results!
