Small can be Beautiful…
Coming soon to my website will be a selection of small postcard-sized, mixed media paintings and works on paper, presented in a mount card frame ready for your own choice of frame to hang the artwork at home!
Here are two of my favourite small paintings framed up to give you an impression of how they will look…

‘Pink Tide ll’ and ‘Singing Sands’ were both painted en plein air near where I live on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. I feel so grateful to live in this place and be surrounded by such beautiful landscapes and inspiration for my painting.
This collection of small paintings will be priced at £90 each plus P&P.
Making Art Cards
I’m hoping to branch out next year and take some of my artwork to local art fairs.

Not everyone has space or a budget to own an original painting, so I’ve been busy making art cards to ensure I will have something for everyone on my stall.
I also had some Christmas cards printed this year, so I’m ready to hit the ground running for Christmas 2023!

Winter Exhibition at Resipole Studios

Our 2022 Sailing Adventure
/by Lisa HoustonThis year we decided to take an extended trip away in the boat and set our sights on reaching Orkney for the very first time! Lots of people sail to Orkney, but for us, it felt like a BIG adventure. There was a considerable amount of pre-trip preparation, but as ever with sailing, the weather played an important part, and in the end, no amount of planning could prepare us for the worst June and July sailing weather on record! BIG winds and BIG seas proved too much of a challenge for us!
We made significant progress in the first week or so and got all the way from Loch Sunart, where we’re based, up to Gairloch, but then the unseasonable weather stalled our progress. We then tucked ourselves in at Lochinver and waited for the weather to improve. Eventually, we made it further up the northwest coast to the small fishing village of Kinlochbervie. Unfortunately, powerful winds prevented us from progressing further, and it became impossible for us to sail round Cape Wrath towards the safe anchorage in Loch Eriboll, the last place on the mainland to shelter before setting off across the Pentland Firth towards Stromness in Orkney.
Although we didn’t make it to Orkney, we discovered some new places and met some interesting people along the way and… well… there’s always next year ?
Here are some of my favourite watercolour and ink sketches from our voyage…
Spring Exhibition at Resipole Studios
/by Lisa HoustonIt was wonderful to be asked to contribute new paintings to be included in the Spring Exhibition at Resipole Studios.
The exhibition opened on 17th April and runs through to 27th May 2022.
For the first time since the pandemic began, there was an opportunity to gather in the gallery, meet some of the artists and enjoy a glass of bubbly whilst looking at the new artworks on display.
To find out more about these artworks check out the information here on my website, contact Resipole Studios or get in touch with me through the link on the website.
All the paintings are framed and ready to hang.
It’s always the perfect time to gift an original artwork to someone special ?
It’s lovely to get a mention…
/by Lisa HoustonI was so delighted to have my artworks mentioned in an article that appeared in an edition of Scotland on Sunday Magazine in October 2021.
The article covers the ambitious self-build project of Fiona and David Tindall and the creation of their wonderful new house – The Shorehouse – in a stunning coastal location on Skye.
When it came to sourcing the finishing touches for their home, they got in touch with me by email to enquire about my artworks which they had seen on the Scottish Women in the Arts Facebook page.
In the end, they bought three of my paintings, which was amazing, and I was so happy to have my artworks heading off to a lovely new home on Skye… Facebook isn’t that bad after all?. On the subject of Facebook my new Lisa Houston Art page is now live – please give it a follow.
The Shorehouse on Skye is a beautiful home built in an amazing location by Fiona and David Tindall and it can be rented through coolstays.com or watersideskye.co.uk, check it out!

31 Days of Ink Drawings for #Inktober 2021
/by Lisa HoustonJake Parker created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavour, with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year. His theory is that anyone can do Inktober, just pick up a pen and get drawing!
I found some words were easier to draw than others!
This is the first year I’ve taken part in the Inktober challenge, and I set out with great enthusiasm to complete my daily ink drawing throughout October. The purpose of completing a daily drawing is to encourage growing and improving and forming positive habits, and I think that did happen. It certainly encouraged me to think and observe and experiment with ink as a medium.
It is also about sharing your art on social media and connecting with other artists through that process. That, for me, was one of the most positive outcomes. It was so interesting to see how other artists interpreted the word prompts and the variety of drawings produced.

Sailing and Sketching
/by Lisa HoustonDuring the sailing season, which happens between April and October, we try to get away on the boat as often as possible.
From where I stay, there is good access to some lovely anchorages in Loch Sunart, and the Small Isles of Canna, Rum, Muck and Eigg are not too far away. Heading out to one of the Small Isles is a favourite destination. They provide the inspiration for many of my paintings. Such beautiful and unspoilt places. Our furthest sailing adventure took us all the way out to the Western Isles last year. Hopefully, we will get back there before the end of this season… weather permitting. One thing experience has taught us… it is better to go WITH the wind and tide than fight against it, so we will see what happens!
Sailing is quite a physically demanding pastime. With only two of us on board, images of me sketching whilst we sail along is not the reality… both of us need to be fully focused on sailing. Still, I try to soak up the atmosphere and store up images along the way.
Travelling by sea gives you a unique perspective on the land, and even familiar places onshore can look so different from the boat. The light can be pretty special too, and magic weather moments frequently happen, especially on the west coast. There is also an opportunity to have some close encounters with marine life. Dolphins are particularly playful and will follow the boat, especially when under sail.
Although I enjoy the sailing bit and journeying by sea, I also love discovering new places. Archie, our Springer Spaniel, makes going ashore a necessity, so there is plenty of opportunity for exploring, and I often take my sketchbook with me. I have a box of materials onboard but prefer my pastels and inks for sketching.
It is a joy to be able to explore new places by boat and to anchor in isolated and remote locations, and it is something I never take for granted.
A Big Thank You
/by Lisa HoustonTHANKS TO RESIPOLE STUDIOS
I would like to say a huge thank you to Resipole Studios Art Gallery for including four of my paintings in their Spring Show. I was thrilled to be asked and felt nervous and excited in equal measure! It was such a privilege to have my paintings in their first art exhibition of the year.
I was also delighted that three of my artworks (above) were sold!
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT
I have been overwhelmed by the response to my paintings since the website was launched in March.
It has been an amazing time. I want to say a special thank you to every single person who has given me such positive feedback about the website, about my artwork and of course to all the people who decided to buy a painting… I am incredibly grateful.
